End of Summer and Hadley’s First Birthday

Summer has definitely proved much slipperier to wrangle this year than I expected, even as busy as I found myself. Not enough posts here, not enough work done on the house, not enough miles run to stay fit, not enough moments spent with my wife, or playing with the baby. Now it is time to head back to school, a milestone that will now always be heralded by the birthday of my daughter, who turns one year old today. Wow! How the time has flown. As cliché as that might be, I feel like my life is proving to be more and more of an exemplar of that particular cliché.

Boston from the River Charles

After a month in the city of Boston, at UMass, working with a bunch of teachers on writing improvement, the last few weeks have found me drifting around our house and trying to finish some projects here and there, as well as gearing up for the big return to work.

Contrary to many people’s notions, teaching really is not just a nine-month of the year job. In reality, the summer could simply be termed the slow period. It’s no different from that cyclical stretch of the year when sales are down and everyone in the office is spending a lot more time surfing the net and forwarding lousy chain emails to everyone they know. That’s is definitely one big difference between teaching and many other jobs. From the minute I walk in the building I have to be on. There is no dragging myself into work after a hard night in hopes of hiding away at my desk and not dealing with anyone while I recover. Everyday there are five shows, sometimes with a break, most of the time with a lot of Q and A afterwards. Still, it is the best gig I have ever found. The hardest thing, at least in the begining of each year, is the fact that there is no pre-season or preview audiences for this teaching gig. So I have got a few weeks of being absolutely waxed, before regaining my sea legs, as it were.

At least this is one of things that greets me when I return from work…

Beyond that, the most important news is the golden birthday of our young one. Yesterday, we had a small gathering to celebrate the occasion. As are most of our soirées, it was a pretty laid back affair. Some friends, some snacks, some beverages, and a cake.

Hadley was looking fabulous, as ever, in her green and pink ensemble and party hat! She is one awfully cute kid.

Birthday Party Outfit   Monkey Cake

Ali crafted this fabulous monkey cake for our little monkey. Yes she did in fact decorate the whole thing. My wife is a woman of many talents! Of course she had an assortment of cupcakes, as well.

Hadley definitely seems to be more of an icing girl, at this point. At first, she treated the actual cake as though it were poison. However, eventually she came around on that opinion and could be seen gobbling up odd chunks from the destruction of her piece. Before long she had successfully ground cake bits all over her face and securely in her hair. She was rather enjoying herself.

Hadley was the gracious recipient of some very kind gifts. So many thanks to all. Most of all thank you for being there to celebrate with us.

Also thanks to my mom, who endeavors to spoil Hadley every chance she gets, despite being afar. Here is just one of the shipments of birthday gifts from her.

Kickstarting the Summer in High Gear

I kept thinking that the summer would arrive and I would get a chance to breath, a little. That notion was quickly dispatched, partially of my own accord and partially of plain circumstance. Upon finishing off the school year, I was under the gun to make some serious progress on the housing front. Ali’s mom was to be arriving the following Sunday. Apart from the heavy-duty cleaning that our place needed, there were things like babyproofing and making our half bath more than simply functional. So most of the week was spent either watching Hadley so Ali could get something done or trying to finish off a short list of tasks to make the house more presentable. Then it was off to entertaining. Oh, and along the way, Hadley got to go to her first birthday party. Congratulations, Sid!

While the in-laws were here we covered a lot of ground. What’s most amazing is how easygoing Hadley was for the whole trip. I mean we went on a Duck Tour and walked the entire Freedom Trail in a single day. Not a peep from our sweet child. She was as good as one could hope, really quite stunning. From there it was trips to places like Salem, Gloucester, Rockport, even Manchester (by the sea) so Ali’s mom could take in some more family and spend the afternoon with her brother. It was a busy week to be sure.

Visiting Rockport

No sooner did they leave and I was set to begin my month long stay with the Boston Writing Project, which just wrapped its first week. Part of the National Writing Project, it is a professional development program that is dedicated to improving student writing K-16. That’s right, kindergarten through university with teachers from across the spectrum. It is pretty awesome actually, but makes for a full day. I am on the 6:53 train into Boston and work my way to UMass-Boston on the harbor, in Dorchester, not usually getting home until 5 or 6 PM. It’s like being at work still. Needless to say it has delayed some of the other tasks around the house. However, I am still hoping to make some progress with the exterior of things.

Of course, this coming week will mark Hadley’s baptism, so even more family will be arriving any day now to help celebrate. That should be great fun. My family has not visited since right after Hadley was born, surprisingly enough. However, my brother David will be making his second trip out and this time it won’t be shortened by any work related rubbish. Plus, he is bringing his significant other, whom we’ve yet to meet. Unfortunately, she was out of town when we made our last trip west. So there’s even more looking forward.

Apart from all that rot, have a look at the rest of the pictures. Some of them are great.

From the Family Sickbed

Illness reigns in Haas House yet again. The colds we endured on our return to our familial homes reared their ugly heads again, only this time they packed a vengeance.

Of course, I was the initiator, again. Having never completely recovered when I reported back to work, it took less than a week for me to begin coughing anew. Before you knew it, I was in full on phlegm and dragging myself to work, just trying to make it to exam week. Next to fall was Hadley, right in line as before, also having never completely rebounded. Our poor little girl has probably had only about two or three days of crackle-free breathing in the last month. Then the stalwart, Ali, finally fell for a second time, and how mightily she has fallen this time. My wife has descended into full-on misery this time ‘round.

Our weekend consisted of self-imposed quarantine that kept us leaving the house only when absolutely necessary. Kindly, Keri showed up on Saturday night for some football, birthday celebrations, and nursemaiding. We preemptively celebrated my day of origin with nachos and a Patriot win. No imported beef sandwiches this year, but I suspect that tradition will return. While it didn’t bother me so much, Ali seemed to feel a bit guilty about not having them this year. They would likely have been wasted this year anyway, considering that neither of us would have been able to taste the delicious treats.

What did work out to be a marvelous end to our sick weekend was that today was a SNOW DAY! Normally, a snow day is more of an inconvenience than anything, but it couldn’t have been more welcome at the end of a string of days that none of us felt well. Since Ali was feeling so lousy, she too stayed home, and all three of us had a fortunate extra day of rest!
