Each New Day and Learning

It’s 5:55 AM and I awake to the soft squeaks and shuffling sounds made by my daughter as she twists and turns in her bed, also waking. She amazingly anticipates my alarm with Swiss precision nearly everyday now. I greet her with many a “Good morning,” as she pulls herself up so that her eyes and nose are all that is visible above the ridgeline of her bed. Having not quite shaken off the night’s slumber, I scoop her up and take her off to change her diaper, while Ali readies herself for morning’s first feeding. I deposit Hadley in the lap of Ali, whereupon she collapses into Ali’s arms, and I am off to the showers. This now has become routine, but a routine that I have grown to love.

First Tooth! Working on Another Tooth

It is amazing how much Hadley is learning of late. It seems like her discovery and awareness has accelerated the last couple of weeks. For one, it is now abundantly clear that Hadley understands a series of hand signals that Ali has been teaching her for the last few months. While she doesn’t know them all, she unquestioningly knows things like “hungry” and “milk,” which elicit the same happy reactions every time. Also on the communication front, she is getting the hang of waving.

Waving Monkey Toes

Hadley’s agility is growing significantly. She has advanced in her choice method of movement, rolling, with some added speed. What amazes me is how readily she tumbles over all of her toys, strewn across the floor, like an all-terrain vehicle. She has begun to improve her crawl, which is a cross between an army crawl and a fish flop. It is terribly amusing to lure her by stacking her cups in a tower, which she is incapable of leaving standing for longer than it takes her to reach and swipe down. Still, in neither case has she completely elevated her belly from the floor and worked both hands and knees in the traditional crawl. However, she is able to regularly rock on her hands and knees and uses this position to push herself into a sitting position from a lying one, no longer relegated to turtle status. So she is becoming quite agile.

Scratch Scratch Scratch

Most impressive is her newfound ability to pull herself up, on virtually anything, to get herself into a kneeling position. Particular favorites are the coffee tale, the fireplace, a box, and any part of your body that is available. All of this is the spur to step up the babyproofing that I have been a bit remiss in completing.

Our little one has also discovered that there are swings that are big enough for her, now that we had to retire her longtime favorite lounger. While we put a lot of oscillations on her baby swing, we had to retire it recently. However, it was just in time for her first venture to a local playground alternative. She doesn’t seem to mind.

Lastly, upon Ali pointing out that Hadley really didn’t have many balls amidst all her toys, I promptly ran out and bought her first soccer ball, as seen below.

Hadley’s Latest Discovery – Her Thumb!

A recent development on the Hadley front is her discovery of her thumb. In the last couple of days, she has started to get just enough control of her hands that she can routinely land one of her mits around her mouth consistently. This has opened a whole new set of oral options. No more Nuk, the knuckle is where it’s at. Currently, she is most fond of the lower thumb knuckle and upper, outside portion of the palm. However, she can hook the whole thumb between her gums occasionally, which is her newfound joy. Let me say, when it happens, she is working that thing, gnawin’, suckin’, chompin’, and slurpin’ to her little heart’s content. It is quite a sight to see, rather comical in fact.

Also, Hadley has found a new favorite pastime, tracking those floating animals hanging from her mobile. She loves the mobiles! She will sit and watch them, cooing and babbling. She gets all excited with the musical one above her bed. If only its tune and motion lasted longer, because it induces all kinds of kicks and wiggles. She has a particular fondness for the blue critters, the blue elephant above her bed and the blue toucan above her swing. There is even a blue elephant printed on the apron of the swing that transfixes our little girl. As a result, Ali has dubbed that one Rasputin, because of his spellbinding powers over Hadley. The pics should attest to this new mobile fascination.

Hopefully, many of you have had the chance to enjoy the photo book from the previous post. I thought it was one of the cooler Flickr tools out there. Plan on seeing some more books soon. I am thinking that Christmas will make for a fantastic one!

I also want to point out that I have begun including a ranking system for posts. So take the time and let me know what you like. While I love it when people leave comments too, clicking on a star is a bit easier, to be sure. Plus, it would be nice to see what people other than Ali think abou the posts.

On a completely different front, the soccer season is finally over, for which I am grateful. As much as I love the game and coaching, even the team I had this year, I am so glad to have some more time during the day. Of course, promptly after the season finished I found a way to break my big toe playing at a coaching clinic. That was a lot of fun, let me tell you. So as a player, I am on the shelf through the Holidays.

Baby Gorilla & the Uninhabitable House

Here in Ali’s inaugural Fritzwinkle posting. As Ali explains, it has been a long time since the last post for various reasons…

Many times Fred receives a phone call when I’m with him. All phone calls begin the same way, “Hi. How are you doing?……Not much….” I am here to tell you that if you are asking him what’s going on with him, “not much,” is a complete lie. There is too much going on. In fact, Fred has been so busy with the end of his school year, fixing up the new house, playing soccer once per week, attending childbirth classes once per week, serving on my company’s human rights committee, and then de-stressing with Playstation 2 FIFA soccer for hours on end that I finally tired of waiting for an updated Fritzwinkle (She forgets to mention that I created and also maintained two class websites for my students in the last few months during the Fritwinkle slowdown.). So I am going to write it. I have threatened Fred several times with this before, but this time I did it!

First of all…it’s all about me this time, so I’ll give the baby update. I have about two and a half months until D-day. So far so good. I mostly have back pain to complain about, but I’m sure Fred would have more complaints about my behavior than I do. We call the baby “Baby Gorilla” because it has strong kicks, it is making me HUGE and it goes through growth spurts that makes it so I am hungry ALL the time, especially for meat – beef. We have successfully completed 3 out of 5 childbirth classes. Fred is being a good sport about the whole thing considering he doesn’t even want to be in the delivery room. He jokes with the teacher and other guys in the class so much that when our teacher needs a victim for any demonstrations, she grabs Fred first. He was the first dad-to-be to have to wear the pregnancy suit. It was a weighted vest with a heavy stomach and large breasts. The vest even came with a sandbag to put pressure on his bladder. Fred’s least favorite parts of the classes are the videos. He calls them his “own personal hell” because he doesn’t like to see babies come out of women.

As for the house….what can I say? It is currently uninhabitable. We still don’t have real locking doors. Just a padlock on the front door and a slab of wood wedged in the back sliding patio door. We should have our doors installed by Friday (knock on wood). Fred ripped up all of the carpeting from the second floor. That made the place smell better at least. Keri and my dad spent two days last week mowing the lawn that hadn’t seen a mower since last year some time. I got to go in after my dad removed some tree stumps and plant some flowers in front to make the place look lived in. Keri spent her Saturday this week pulling out every carpet staple from the 15 stairs leading to the second floor. Fred is now in the more satisfying phase of priming and painting. Once we paint, we get to have carpet installed on the second floor. We also need windows, a water heater, and we will gut and redo the bathroom. It’s a good thing that Fred’s a teacher. This house is his full time job this summer. He’s under a bit of a crunch to make the place move-in ready before the baby arrives on September 7th.
