Digging Out in New England

Well, it has been an exciting last week here in New England. Today, was a good day to do some catching up on ye old fritzwinkle. In the last four days we have been slammed with somewhere over a foot of snow.

Half of it crippled the whole region Thursday smack in the middle of the afternoon rush. It was by far the worst conditions I can ever remember being a driver. It was absolutely ridiculous. My trip to pick up Hadley and head home took over two hours, and I nearly didn’t make it. This is a trip that normally takes about twenty minutes or so. Beginning about 1 PM somewhere between 6-9 inches fell fast and furiously until about 8 PM. The interstates were parking lots where it was not rare for people to simply put the car in park, get out of the car, brush off the snow, get back in and start driving again. The occasional abandoned car was not out of picture either. Ali, having to head west from the city spent five hours to travel about eight miles, before deciding to whole up at Keri’s for nearly the evening. She eventually, restarted the trek after 11 PM and pulled in around 12:30 AM. Luckily she doesn’t work on Fridays, but I do. So, after a fortunate delayed start I finished the week at school.

Then today’s morning greeted us with an expected Nor’easter that dropped another 6+ inches on us. This leaves us up to our knees with the winter’s downy. Fortunately, our two great neighbor’s hit most of our driveway with a snowblower, which meant that I only needed to spend an hour and half with shovel in hand to clear the rest of the area and get the cars capable of use. While it sure looks pretty, it no doubt complicates just about everything. Yet it made for a good day to shut in and play with the baby and watch some football, with the sweet smell of Ali’s Christmas cookies in the air. Unfortunately, today’s odd mix of snow, then freezing sleet, and windy conditions thwarted the anticipated Patriot drubbing of the Jets, in the much anticipated Spygate Bowl, a mere 10 point victory when everyone was waiting for something in the neighborhood of 50.

Go Patriots!

Needless to say that the last couple of weeks have been hurried to say the least. As we prepare to head home for the holidays to show off the new addition, we’ve been doing all the last minute shopping and such. Ali even got the tree up and decorated to ring in Hadley’s first Christmas right. The way this season is going though, we are beginning to refer to the holiday as Hadley Day! Now that we have a baby, it is stunning how many gifts continue to arrive. My mother has particularly lost her mind with a gift giving fever for her one and only granddaughter. It is a good thing that we bought a house, because we need a place to put everything! Still, we couldn’t be more grateful. If only people could gift us some time. Then we could finish moving into said domicile.

But enough chatter here are some more pics of the golden child!

Happy Valentine’s Day & Birthday Recap

Happy Valentines Day to all. May thoughts of Cupid reign supreme and the chocolate flow like water. In addition to being the lover’s day, it also turns out to be the school year’s first snow day, considering New England is being belted by a Nor’easter that has delivered snow, slush, and a great deal of ice. Thus, the driving conditions are such that those kids traveling to school would indeed be dangerous. Coasting into the February break, I can think of worse times to claim a free day, although this isn’t exactly a snow day fraught with fun and winter enjoyment. It is pretty nasty outside and only getting nastier.

Well, my efforts to keep things here more up to date is a never ending struggle of futility. The school year has definitely been taking a toll on me this year. Sometime in November things became a grind and I kept thinking that they would get better, but, alas, they have not. While I certainly enjoy my job, I have just been feeling like everything is a whole lot more work this year. Needless to say, I am looking forward to the vacation week with some serious anticipation. Hopefully, I can get some work related things done that can make the march to the end of the year a good one.

So, my birthday past a few weeks ago. As usual, my lovely wife shipped in the delicious Italian beef sandwiches from the native Chicago. It has become the birthday tradition, and one I think we anticipate highly. Keri might be the most eager of all, requesting frequent updates of when the goods will arrive and when we will be busting them open and devouring them. It was an easy going evening where the three of us inhaled some beefs and an exquisite coffee and mocha-chip ice cream cake.

My wife is without question the most wonderful women in the world, making a last second adjustment on the cake and once again proving her keen insight into the workings of my mind.

Even the family birthday at Ali’s parents, where her little brother and I share the party and treats was a low-key and enjoyable affair. Many thanks to all that were kind enough to phone, send cards, or generously give me a gift. It was a very pleasant time, considering that I just keep getting older and have recently begun to start feeling it.

Tomorrow, will be my beloved’s birthday, for which I feel completely unprepared and inept. The trouble with her is that she is extremely thoughtful, sweet, and amazing at discerning what gifts give me, while I am a complete boob, unless the gift is some kind of jeweled bauble. Hopefully, some extra inspiration will come my way.

Now the Real Snow Has Truly Arrived

Well, the first “real” snowstorm has finally settled upon New England, and we are getting hit with it today. Well, at least we don’t have airplanes running of the runways, yet. Logan International is quickly becoming notorious for runway incidents. So, it may only be a matter of time. Nevertheless, we are feeling the full effect of the storm that ripped through the Midwest and the snow arrived, fouling everything up even before dawn arrived.

While the accumulation was only an inch or two by 7:00 AM, the stunning thing was that school was not cancelled. Of course all the kids moaned and complained, questioning, “Why are we even here?” I could almost see their point in that about 300 schools in the Greater Boston cancelled classes. Quite frankly, I was delighted that classes were in session. After last year, I got my fill of snow days for awhile. Our school year already goes well into June. I would rather not be preparing lessons or grading papers in July. Can you even imagine school after the Fourth of July? Plus, with classes meeting only four days a week, on an odd rotating schedule, every time we lose a day, it fouls the schedule up for every section that does not meet that day. It is a complete hassle and almost impossible to get multiple classes anywhere near being on the same schedule.

Anyway, the blizzard-like conditions should make it a fun weekend.
